Paul Wachtel: Integrating Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioral and Family Systems Approaches To Enhance Treatment Effectiveness

Continuing Education, Event

4 CE credits

This conference is designed to be relevant to licensed mental health professionals at all levels of training and experience.

Conference Summary

Paul Wachtel, Ph.D., is a leader in the field of relational psychotherapy. His writings emphasize the integration of different modes of thinking and how different psychotherapy schools of thought can be integrated to enhance your work with individuals, couples and families.

Dr. Wachtel will discuss how psychodynamically guided work can be usefully complemented by ideas and methods from other treatment modalities. For instance, many aspects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) converge with important elements of relational psychoanalysis. Dr. Wachtel emphasizes how the relationship between patient and therapist contributes to corrective emotional experiences and to change. This conference will include clinical examples and videos of therapy sessions to clarify and illustrate how effective treatment emerges from an integrative, relatonally based treatment model.

Dr. Jerry Gold will be discussing the importance of Dr. Wachtel’s work in psychotherapy integration and relational psychotherapy.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to formulate comments to patients that enhance the clinical process and to avoid comments that are subtly and implicitly accusatory or demeaning.
  2. Discuss how problematic personality patterns can be understood as deriving from vicious circles in which the internal world and the world of daily experience mutually recreate each other.
  3. Identify the difference between rationalistic and constructivistic CBT.
  4. Discuss the convergences between relational psychoanalysis and elements of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
