This conference is designed to be relevant to licensed mental health professionals at all levels of training and experience.
Paul Wachtel, Ph.D., is a leader in the field of relational psychotherapy. His writings emphasize the integration of different modes of thinking and how different psychotherapy schools of thought can be integrated to enhance your work with individuals, couples and families.
Dr. Wachtel will discuss how psychodynamically guided work can be usefully complemented by ideas and methods from other treatment modalities. For instance, many aspects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) converge with important elements of relational psychoanalysis. Dr. Wachtel emphasizes how the relationship between patient and therapist contributes to corrective emotional experiences and to change. This conference will include clinical examples and videos of therapy sessions to clarify and illustrate how effective treatment emerges from an integrative, relatonally based treatment model.
Dr. Jerry Gold will be discussing the importance of Dr. Wachtel’s work in psychotherapy integration and relational psychotherapy.

Paul Wachtel, Ph.D., is CUNY Distinguished Professor at The City College of New York and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He has made, and continues to make, significant and groundbreaking contributions to psychology and psychotherapy. He is the author of Relational Theory and the Practice of Psychotherapy (2008), Inside the Session: What Really Happens in Psychotherapy (2011), Therapeutic Communication: Knowing What to Say When (2011) and Cyclical Psychodynamics and the Contextual Self: The Inner World, the Intimate World, and the World of Culture and Society (2014). The titles of Dr. Wachtel’s books reflect the range of his interests and his ongoing focus on understanding people in the context of societal, cultural, racial and relational influences.
In addition to teaching and writing, Dr. Wachtel is on the editorial boards of several journals and is the recipient of numerous awards from American Psychological Association (APA) Divisions 29 and 39. He is a past president of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration. Dr. Wachtel’s practice is in Manhattan.
Jerry Gold, Ph.D. ’80, ABPP, professor of psychology in the Derner Institute at Adelphi University, is a former editor of the Journal of Psychotherapy Integration and is currently a member of the editorial boards of several journals. His private clinical practice is in Great Neck, New York.
